  • About Aikido

Aikido, a contemporary Japanese martial art, was crafted in the earlier part of this century by the esteemed late master Professor Morihei Ueshiba, affectionately known as O Sensei. The Founder peacefully passed away in 1969 at the age of eighty-six.

While Aikido is renowned for its effectiveness in combat, its true essence transcends mere physical conflict resolution. Drawing from a foundation in traditional Japanese jujitsu, Professor Ueshiba dedicated the latter portion of his life to honing the art as a vehicle for refining and elevating the human spirit. Through his efforts, he birthed what he aptly called 'Aikido', or 'the Way of Harmony with the Forces and Principles of Nature'. Aikido stands as a genuine 'budo', a path where the sharp blade of martial training is wielded as a 'Way' toward spiritual enlightenment.

    Aikido in Australia

Aiki Kai Australia was founded in 1965 by Sugano Shihan and celebrates over 50 years. After the passing of Sugano Sensei in 2010, Tony Smibert Shihan, 7th Dan, continues today as the World Aikido Headquarters (Hombu) Representative in Australia. The Association has highly graded representatives in all States and Territories.

Alice Springs Dojo has two experienced Shihans who have instructed Aikido for over 40 years in the Northern Territory, they moved to Alice Spring in 1984 to assist in the development of the local dojo (Training Hall). Mike Petery Shihan &  Marie Petery Shihan hold the rank of 6th Dan Black Belt and regularly attend National Summer & Winter Schools, they also hold an annual National Easter Training School in Alice Springs.

  • About Eskrima

The Art of Eskrima: Self Defence and Health Benefits

Cacoy Doce Pares World Federation was founded by Supreme Grandmaster Ciriaco Cacoy Canete, one of the original founders of the Doce Pares Arnis Eskrima school in Cebu City, Philippines in 1932. This system incorporates the fluid elliptical striking techniques for which Cacoy Doce Pares is famous. Disarming and Eskrido throwing techniques are also included as is grappling from Pangamot, and Dumog. The style is realistic and combat-focused employing continuous, rapid, and fluid motion when striking displaying versatility and agility.

Eskrima is an advanced weaponry based martial art and tends to be learned much faster them most Japanese and Chinese systems. Eskrima is very adaptable. A practitioner can effectively use an umbrella, walking stick or even a tightly rolled newspaper as well as empty hands against an attacker. An experienced Eskrimador can also disarm an attacker who is armed with a stick, bottle and in advanced stages of Panhamot (Filipino Ju Jitsu) training, a knife, machete or even a gun.

Like other martial arts, Eskrima promotes physical and emotional self-awareness and self discipline. Strength, speed and flexibility are built up through exercises and routines. In particular flexibility of the wrists, co-ordination of the hands, mental concentration, eye speed and physical sensitivity.
